Velocity 2014

Betfair Engineering went to Velocity (Europe) 2014 . Velocity is an event for developers, operation engineers to meet, share knowledge, show case information, products and ideas at the cutting edge of our industry. At Betfair we took the opportunity to send engineers from all our technology hubs (Cluj, Porto and London) to this experience. As expected it didn’t let us down. The event this year (2014) was over three days (17–19 November 2014) in the Beautiful city of Barcelona in Spain.

The range of subjects is very broad , ranging for the very technical to some quite soft topic discussion. all in all we find it very interesting and had some ideas to bing back to home base.

The range of items discussed is so broad that there is not enough time to discuss them all here. A few are worth highlighting and linking.

Jess Sussna “Using Promise Theory to Improve Digital Service Quality“, Laine Campbell “Recruiting for Diversity in Tech“, Vanessa Hurst talking about “Cultures of Continuous Learning“, Jon Cowie talking about “Customising CHEF for Fun and Profit“, Ryan Frantz “It’s 3am Do you know why you got paged“, Joshua Hoffman talked about “Linux Containers from Scratch” – This particular talk got one of group so excited that he was putting a demo of it together in the taxi to the Airport after the conference !

This is just a fraction of the discussions that were presents. The full set of keynote talks are here (Velocity 2014 Keynote Talks). We got a lot from it and came away with a lot of ideas, talking points and promises to change certain things. Slides and notes from a lot of the talks are here (Slides).
